Garden Beet created a great living wall here with the Woolly Pocket living wall system. She’s a landscape architect in the UK and has done a number of installations with Woolly Pockets. It really adds some pizazz to the backyard.

Eco Walls, based in Bordentown, NJ, is expanding the green footprint in urban environments. Where new construction in urban environments often means losing greenspace, Eco Walls reverses that trend using living walls.

They grow their plants right in their greenhouse in a proprietary blend of soilless medium design to wick and lock in moisture while providing optimum levels of oxygen, and beneficial microbes to the plants roots. The mix eliminates the dry out, rot, and matrix decay associated with conventional soil-based mediums.

As a full service vertical gardening company, Eco Walls designs and builds vertical gardens with their modular panels. They come assembled a unique blend of inorganic planting medium for a fast, simple construction process. First the J channel is mounted, then the EcoWall® is hung. Next, the self automated irrigation system is attached and then planting can begin.

They have done some pretty neat aquaponic applications (incorporating aquatic animals) into some of their vertical gardens. One such application was completed at Rutgers University and acts as both a botanical display for the university and an educational element for students; highlighting ecologic interaction between the plants and fish. The fish produce waste, which is broken down by microorganisms on the EcoWall and used by the plants as nutrients. The plants remove pollutants from the water; creating pristine water parameters for the fish.

Flowerbox – A Contemporary Green Wall

Flowerbox, a company from Quebec, Canada, has a few contemporary living wall designs. These flowerboxes are designed to hang inside your home. They’re basically small planters inside three different types of boxes. You can order cardboard – yes, cardboard – aluminum or ceramic. The reason that the cardboard works for the planters is because you still water the planters traditionally/horizantally. Just take the planter down, water it carefully into the compacted soil, then hang it back up. The planters come with 1, 3, or 4 hole versions in a variety of colours.

Living Wall in Getafe, Madrid, Spain

Getafe is a city in the southern zone of the metropolis of Madrid, and is one of the most populated and industrialized cities in the municipality. These pictures were taken two months after planting. This living wall is on all four sides of a ventilation structure over a supermarket. Local residents had complained about the look of supermarket’s roof and they chose a living wall as the best solution to improve the roof’s aesthetics. While there’s a mini courtyard on the supermarket’s roof, the living wall is not accessible to the public.
