Hotspotting’s close-up of Patrick’s vertical garden
Hot Nat from Hotspotting got close to one of Patrick Blanc’s vertical garden’s – The Athenaeum hotel! She’s taken some close-up pictures of the ‘mur vegetals’ of the master vertical gardener so we can have more of an idea of how he did it.

Vertical Garden Close Up
Patrick makes no secret of the basic design. He says right out that he uses a metal backing with PVC sheets riveted to the backing.. and then polyamide felt stapled to those sheets. He waters the green wall hydroponically and the water drips into a reservoir. A pump then pushes the water back the top of the garden to water it all over again. You’ll see from Hot Nat’s pictures that he’s actually using small pockets in the felt filled with dirt to make the plants a bit more secure.

Living wall close up
I’ve read about a couple installations where there’s been at least two layers of felt attached to the pvc. Between the felt layers, pockets of dirt are made and the plants grow out of them there.
Hot Nat got a good picture showing the piping system for Patrick’s vertical garden as you can see below. Nice work Nat!
