Here’s another form a vertical garden. I’d looked at this quite a while ago and to be brutally honest, I’m not a fan. I’d looked into this type system quite a bit.. it involves using pvc piping and a pump. You can either make it aquaponic or hydroponic.. with aeroponic giving faster growth if done right, but costing more.

First, the perks. It’s an interesting idea.. and it’s often done by home gardeners (with the pipes being horizontal instead of vertical) who want to grow produce all year round in their home. It saves on space… so that makes it handy. Also, in my quest to find the best way to grow plants, I noticed that this style of growing crops is fairly popular among marijuana growers. Yup, you heard me. It’s handy because you can grow a lot of crops in a small space indoors and concealed if using grow lights. Why does it work so well for that? Because marijuana is a high-value crop. The cost of paying for the electricity to grow your cucumbers likely would give you a negative return on investment, but it works for weed.

So, you may be wondering, is it practical?

There’s only two reasons I could see to build this system..

1. Looks?? That might work.. for my taste you’d have to position the pipes closer together than what they are so you have an actual wall of plants, but for the most part you can do a wall that looks better cheaper without the hassle of cutting pipe, cementing it, etc.

2. Save on groceries? In all honesty, I was hoping that a system like this could save you money.. but looking at the options for aeroponics out there, to do it right you need to spend a lot of money on high psi misting nozzles and a high psi pump. Plus if indoors, you’d need grow lights to grow food most likely. In the end you’ll have a fancy setup, but it likely won’t save you money, unless your a drug producer.

Just FYI, I don’t know if it’s aeroponics.. I went to the website provided at the end of the video and it looks like you have to pay about 29 for the plans to build this system, and I didn’t do it. I do know that you can build a vertical garden like this using aeroponics, and it would cost a fair bit to build.
