This has got to be one of the best solutions for lighting vertical gardens indoors. I’d heard of solar tubes before.. but hadn’t really put it together with growing green walls in your home. We all know that sunlight is by far the best lighting you can give your plants. Sometimes it’s hard to balance the benefits of an indoor living wall and the added expense a complex lighting system might bring if it doesn’t have sufficient natural lighting for the chosen plants via decent windows.

But here’s the thing. With these SolaTubes, you can get all the natural lighting you need to have perfectly content plants in your vertical garden.. even ones that may have higher light requirements such as herbs or other edibles. You don’t have to worry about any added electrical expenses or getting expensive grow lights and systems… not to mention using extra energy… These systems will work for you any time the sun is shining which is all the plants are hoping for anyway.

The video below mentions the surface they use in the tubes is 99.something% reflective compared to mirrors which are 70-80%. That means you’re getting sunlight that nearly mimics what plants would be getting outdoors. It’s an incredible solution for installing living walls indoors. The company mentions they’ve installed them in residential and commercial locations. Here’s SolaTube’s site

Ng Sek San was the principle designer of Mao Marilyn and the Big Garden. With a post grad diploma in landscape architecture and a bachelor of civil engineering, Ng Sek San presented this design to the Singapore Garden Festival. Small living wall panels were used to hold individual plants. The plants are uniform in size, but very different in color which makes the design work. I am guessing that the panels are wire mesh stuffed with sphagnum moss to hold the plants. New Zealand is known for its sphagnum moss, and it’s right next door to Singapore.

Here’s a green idea for an office divider. It’s a living wall that’s moveable so you can slide it wherever you want in an office. This is a great youtube video with the interviewer getting solid information about how to build a living wall. You can make the vertical garden different colours depending on what plants you use and some of the benefits of having a living wall are explained in the video such as cleaning the air of a building. This vertical garden used 4 layers of felt and is made of polyester so it doesn’t rot or break down over time.
