Habitat Horticulture was founded to bring plants into urban areas. They install living walls to improve a building’s aesthetics as well as to make it a healthier place to live and work. David Brenner founded Habitat Horticulture and is the designer of the living walls. His unusal education of a degree in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Psychology helped him delve deeper into the effects plants have on people. Brenner likes to work with plants that are extremely threatened or completely extinct in the wild. His passion is to continue to use threatened plants to help preserve them as much as possible.

What used to be a stark concrete pillar has just recently been transformed by Habitat Horticulture into a living “plant pillar”. New Resource Bank, located in the heart of San Francisco’s financial district is a bank designed to help environmentally conscious businesses grow through better loan rates and green incentives. Habitat Horticulture’s living wall is a nice addition to the banking facility’s Gold LEED certification.

Flowerbox – A Contemporary Green Wall

Flowerbox, a company from Quebec, Canada, has a few contemporary living wall designs. These flowerboxes are designed to hang inside your home. They’re basically small planters inside three different types of boxes. You can order cardboard – yes, cardboard – aluminum or ceramic. The reason that the cardboard works for the planters is because you still water the planters traditionally/horizantally. Just take the planter down, water it carefully into the compacted soil, then hang it back up. The planters come with 1, 3, or 4 hole versions in a variety of colours.

Lisa Wheeler has a fantastic blog about living walls. She is constantly creating DIY vertical gardens from seemlingly random material that she miraculously turns into works of art! For example:

I found this flowery thingie for cheap, made a mound of soil held in place by mesh, and turned it into this:

She’s made living walls from all sorts of trays. She fills them with dirt, covers them with mesh, slits holes in the mesh for the plants, then plants them! They stay horizontal for about two months, then once they’ve gotten a bit established, she hangs them up like a work of living art. You can see her homemade living walls here.

Verde 360 is a Mexican company founded in 2006 that builds and maintains living walls. They create custom living walls to green up an urban environment. They’ve done some stellar work for brands including Nike and Steve Madden using felt and custom steel irrigation trays/gutters as reservoirs. A few of their projects are below:
